How Venice Decor created frescoes

Tiepolo method, an immortal technique

Over the years, Venice Decor has developed a unique and inimitable fresco technique. The pictorial technique is relatively simple, from the point of view of explanation, but requires great mastery and experience to execute.

Venice Decor has invested in learning more about the painting techniques used by Giambattista Tiepolo, a famous Venetian painter and our Venetian artisans use the same ancient painting technique in their frescoes. The materials and techniques he used in the 1700s had been employed by painters for centuries before him.

Fresco, or buon fresco as it is sometimes called, is an example of a techniques the young Tiepolo learned as an apprentice and used throughout his long career. Famous examples of fresco art are the large reception room of Ca' Diva on the Grand Canal of Venice, and the stupendous vault frescos in the residence of Wurzburg painted by Tiepolo together with his sons Domenico and Lorenzo.

The ancient technique

What is fresco art?

Exploring the ancient technique of painting on plaster Fresco painting is a method of painting water-based pigments on freshly applied plaster, usually on wall surfaces. The colors, which are made by grinding dry-powder pigments in pure water, dry and set with the plaster to become a permanent part of the wall.

After having made all the preparatory drawings of the commissioned project in full scale, it is necessary to define and study in a precise and detailed manner, the chiaroscuro, the colors and the sequence of the phases.

The colors are made only of natural pigments in powder that do not contain fixatives, but are mixed with a special adhesive and interpenetrate which absorbs them, creating a whole new and exciting material with an original and classic effect.

One of the best characteristics of this painting is its durability which is much greater than that of dry painting.
